What is Equity and How to Calculate ItIf you have a hand that is probably behind, but has the potential to improve to a winner, you need to decide whether it is worth continuing with it through the various streets, and how much you are prepared to pay to do so.

Once you have managed that, you can move on to the calculating how they might help you. The best way to demonstrate what we mean by outs is to look at a few common examples:.

If another heart appears on the turn or river, you make a flush, and unless another player has a full house or better, you will win the hand.

There are 13 cards of each suit in the deck. This is an area where our intuition may mislead us. But in reality, we don't even need to be a favourite in order for calling to be correct.

Call or fold? Hopefully, our instinct tells us to call this time. We don't care in the slightest that we will lose the majority of the time. Our original question is clearly a less extreme scenario and a little more realistic, but the same principles apply.

So, how often do we need to win? So, how much of the total pot would we be investing with our call? The player counts the number of cards that will improve his hand, and then multiplies that number by four to calculate his probability of catching that card on either the turn or the river.

If the player misses his draw on the turn, he multiplies his outs by two to find his probability of filling his hand on the river. Another important concept in calculating odds and probabilities is pot odds.

Pot odds are the proportion of the next bet in relation to the size of the pot. Experienced players compare the pot odds to the odds of improving their hand.

If the pot odds are higher than the odds of improving the hand, the expert player will call the bet; if not, the player will fold. Mathematics can be used in many different situations; however, they are most commonly used when a player is on a draw such as a flush or straight draw.

If an opponent makes a bet and you are on a draw, you are faced with the decision of whether or not you should call to try and complete the draw by the next card, or fold and let your opponent take the pot.

In this situation a player that has good knowledge of poker mathematics will always know whether or not to call, whilst a player that has no knowledge of mathematics will be unsure.

Players who are unfamiliar with poker odds will make an educated guess on whether or not they should call.

If the bet is large, they may feel that it is too expensive to try and catch the right card, but if the bet is small they will be more inclined to call.

On the other hand, a player that can use poker mathematics correctly will be able to work out the pot odds they are getting on the hand and act accordingly.

However, in most cases, you will have implied odds meaning you can win more when improved and can still justify a call.

Moreover, if you have an overcard to the board, it can give additional outs to draw to a winning hand and even give you direct odds to make that call.

Just taking a glance at the table you can see how unlikely you are to hit a strong hand on the flop. Moreover, keep in mind, that your opponent will likely miss as well and the probability of him having a strong poker hand is quite low.

Therefore, you should not be afraid to bet as a bluff and learn how to continue putting a lot of pressure on your opponents. You can learn a bit more in my continuation bet article and will see that bluffing is often a good idea.

Understanding how likely you are to win confrontation preflop can help you make more educated decisions. Moreover, you will understand when you should let go of weaker hand when not having right poker odds to continue.

Therefore, knowing these probabilities and improving your poker math will make you a better player. Let me explain a bit further. It will not work if you express the pot odds as any other factor eg: 3 to 2 etc.

So lets bring the two elements together in our example hand and see how we can use the new poker math techniques you have learned to arrive at a decision of whether to continue in the hand or whether to fold.

To do this we compare the percentage probability that we are going to hit one of our Outs and win the hand, with the Break Even Percentage. If our Probability of hitting an out is higher than the Break Even percentage then this represents a good bet — the odds are in our favour.

Flop comes down Q J 6 and the Dealer bets 10c, the small blind folds. Three of a Kind There are 13 ranks to choose from for the three of a kind and 4 ways to arrange 3 cards among the four to choose from.

Specific High Card For example, let's find the probability of drawing a jack-high. There must be four different cards in the hand all less than a jack, of which there are 9 to choose from.

We must then subtract 1 for the combination which would form a straight, leaving From above we know there are ways to arrange the suits. Multiplying by yields , which the number of ways to form a jack-high hand.

For ace-high remember to subtract 2 rather than 1 from the total number of ways to arrange the ranks since A-K-Q-J and A are both valid straights. Here is a good site that also explains how to calculate poker probabilities.
